PERSONALITY Lan Xichen had kind and gentle personality. He tended to wear a smile on his face, and was polite to everyone he met. In contrast to many in their cultivation society, Lan Xichen treated everyone with the same courtesy regardless of status.

Slow to anger, Lan Xichen was only provoked if the situation involved someone he loved, such as when he became angry at the thought that Wei Wuxian had deliberately mocked Lan Wangji's feelings.

He likewise tended to believe the best in others, to the extent that he admitted he did not wish to learn why his mother had killed someone, and, despite losing trust in his younger sworn brother, insisted on listening to Jin Guangyao's reasons. Overall, he believes that most people act with good intentions despite their actions.

BIO Lan Xichen was removed from his mother's care as soon as he was born. Since his father Qingheng-Jun was in seclusion, he was raised by his uncle Lan Qiren.

Lan Qiren was a strict instructor for Lan Xichen and his younger brother Lan Wangji, as he was determined that his nephews would not repeat their father's errors.

They eagerly anticipated the one day every month that they were allowed to see their mother. Unfortunately, Lan Xichen was less than nine years old when Lan Qiren informed them that they had no need to visit her anymore; their mother had died. As he was a couple years older than his brother, Lan Xichen was not a part of the class attended by Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, and others. Still, upon meeting Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen sensed that his brother wished to invite him to investigate the appearance of Water Ghosts in Caiyi Town with them, and promptly invited them himself.

Once they investigated the nearby Biling Lake, the ghosts were revealed to stem from a Waterborne Abyss, a particularly difficult creature to subdue. Lan Xichen quickly realized that the Qishan Wen Clan had merely driven their Waterborne Abyss to Gusu rather than purge it.

Later, Lan Xichen encountered Wei Wuxian after a beating ordered by Lan Wangji. Concerned at the severity of Wei Wuxian's injuries, Lan Xichen informed him that he would heal quicker if he used the Cloud Recesses' cold springs.

Lan Wangji sought out Lan Xichen after Wei Wuxian gifted him two rabbits, claiming that he had promised to take care of them. Lan Xichen warned his brother not to let them affect his studies, nor to tell Lan Qiren that Wei Wuxian had given them. Later, Lan Xichen expressed amusement when the rabbits sought Lan Wangji out while they brothers performed handstands together, and complimented Lan Wangji on their names.

Lan Xichen always practiced Cleansing in his mother's cottage.
